North star metric

Definition: A north star metric is the single measure that best captures the value a product delivers to customers, used to align teams on long-term growth.

Examples include weekly active teams for a collaboration tool, or nights booked for a travel marketplace. A good north star reflects customer value, predicts revenue and can be influenced by the team's work.

It is supported by input metrics that teams can move directly, often tracked through OKRs.
