RICE scoring

Definition: RICE is a prioritization framework that scores an idea by Reach, Impact, Confidence and Effort. The score is Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort.

Reach is how many people the work affects in a period. Impact is how much it moves the goal for each person, often on a scale from 0.25 to 3. Confidence is how sure you are of the estimates, as a percentage. Effort is the work required, usually in person-months.

RICE is popular because it is simple and penalizes big, uncertain bets. Its weakness is that the inputs are estimates, so a precise-looking score can hide rough guesses.
