Release planning

Definition: Release planning is the process of deciding which features, fixes and improvements go into each product release, and when each release is expected to ship.

A release plan connects the roadmap to delivery. It sets a target date for each release, attaches the work that belongs in it, and gives sales, support and marketing a dependable view of what is landing and when.

Release plans change as estimates firm up and priorities shift. Good release planning keeps the reason for each change, so downstream teams can adjust launches, customer commitments and documentation.
